Project Description
This phase of the project involves the construction of a 3.75
kilometre stretch of single carriageway from the existing
N6 west of Loughrea at Caherlavine (Junction B
in Fig.1) to the existing N6 east of Loughrea at Fairfield
(Junction D in Fig.1).
Eight junctions and some realignment of regional and county
roads will also be included. Access to and from the proposed
N6 Loughrea Bypass will be restricted to key junctions. The
proposed first phase of the scheme is shown in Fig.1.
The Bypass starts in the townland of Caherlavine on the existing
N6 where it forms a junction with the existing R349 Athenry
road. A roundabout is proposed at this location to cater for
all traffic movements between the existing N6, the R349, the
new Bypass and the future N66 Gort link road (Junction B
in Fig.1).
(Note: When the N66 Gort Link proceeds at a later date the
currently proposed priority junction near junction B
will be removed).
The Bypass travels east through the townlands of Gorteennabohogy
into Cosmona where an at-grade staggered junction is proposed
on the Raruddy road (Junction G in Fig.1). This
junction is at-grade allowing traffic to move from the Bypass
to the existing road network. The Bypass continues east into
the townland of Monearmore where a roundabout is proposed
(Junction C in Fig.1). This proposed roundabout
collects traffic from the R350 Bullaun and New Inn road, the
new Bypass and the future link road to the N6 Galway to East
Ballinasloe scheme.
The Bypass then continues east through the townlands of Caheronaun,
where a junction is proposed on the Danesfort road (Junction
H on Fig.1). This will be an at-grade staggered
junction to facilitate local traffic movements. The Bypass
terminates east of Loughrea where it meets the existing N6
in the townlands of Greeneenagh and Fairfield (Junction D
in Fig.1). A roundabout is proposed at this location.
