PUBLIC ART
Public Art can create a positive artistic and cultural environment and is a strong visible manifestation of a Local Authorities relationship with the arts. A vibrant and imaginative Public Art Programme ensures that challenging arts projects are brought to new audiences.
Public Art in Ireland is often linked with the ‘Per Cent for Art Scheme', which was established in 1985 and is operated through the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DoEHLG). The DoEHLG has since operated the scheme through the various local authorities and now all government departments with a capital budget may utilise the percent for art scheme. Galway County Council seeks to enhance the public space and cultural experience of communities in the County, through assisting and engaging all units of the Council, artists and communities in the development of best practice in Public Art. Galway County Council's East Galway Public Art Programme is an example of this committment and has led to permanent art pieces in six locations in East County Galway.
