The Arts Office greatly appreciates the support of the Arts Council in the development of our Youth Arts Programme
Galway Film Centre has a youth outreach programme known as the Flying Film Squads. This takes the form of a weeklong residency where two experienced filmmakers work with schools or community groups to produce a short film of 3-5 minutes in duration. Typically this takes place in a classroom environment with transition year students. Galway Film Centre also hold animation workshops, one day programmes in primary schools where children produce a short animation piece. The children work with an experienced animator to produce work using drawing, clay modelling and sand drawing techniques. All students receive a DVD of their work at the end of the course. The Film Squads work with a range of animators including artists Aideen Barry and Edith Pieperhoff to produce these workshops. A Mentored Residency Award for level 8 graduate of GMIT is awarded in partnership with Galway City Council, Galway County Council and Galway Arts Centre.
Galway Arts Centre in conjunction with Galway County Council organise National Study Gallery Study Days for County based secondary schools.
Galway Youth Theatre delivers a series of drama residencies and workshops County wide. Since 2001 the Arts Office and GYT have worked together to maximise the number of young people reached with the training programmes in Galway County. The effort has proved to be very successful and productive. At least 40% of the core membership of Galway Youth Theatre live in County Galway. School residencies have included an average of 3 County Schools per year. This has enabled GYT to reach circa 200 young people from County Galway each year. Links have been established in Dunmore, Ballinasloe, Oranmore, Oughterard, New Inn, Mountbellew, Loughrea, Gort, Athenry, Carna, Aughrim and Woodford schools. In 2009 GYT established residencies in Spiddal, Oranmore and Loughrea. These residencies saw over 300 transition year students take on a ten week course in Theatre. The County Touring Initiative has given GYT the opportunity to tour a theatre production to young people throughout County Galway. The tour sees GYT tour a chosen play that holds relevant material for its young audience to second level schools in Galway City and County. In Autumn 2009 GYT toured ‘Country Music’ by Simon Stephens to schools throughout Galway. GYT produced ‘ A Midsummers Night’s Dream’ as part of the Cuirt International Festival of Literature 2009. GYT also had three productions on the Galway Arts Festival 2009 Programme- ‘When You Cure Me’ by Jack Thorne, ‘Yellowmoon’ by David Greig and ‘Fugee’ by Abi Morgan. They looked at current issues in developing a sound work developed out of collaborative thinking. There was 4-5 days of workshops and one performance day.
