Overview of the Pride of Place Competition

Pride of Place is an all-island competition which is directed towards recognising improvements by local communities to create civic pride in their area. The competition focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their area.

The competition is hosted by Co-operation Ireland under its Local Authority Programme in conjunction with the all-island Local Authority Steering Forum comprising officials from authorities in both parts of Ireland.

In 2011, over one hundred & thirty entrants representing communities from cities, towns and villages from throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were nominated by their local authorities to take part in the competition.

In Pride of Place, community groups have the unique opportunity to showcase specific pride initiatives which will have long lasting and positive impacts on their society.

Activities may include the development of community centres, the tackling of social exclusion issues, the establishment of residents associations or the provision of childcare facilities.

The programme isn’t purely about the attractiveness of an area – but is about specific pride initiatives which will have long lasting, and positive impacts and includes a whole range of activities from the simple clearing of litter/graffiti, and improving shop fronts; to more sophisticated activities such as the development of community centres, promotion of heritage and tackling social exclusion issues.

County Galway has enjoyed considerable success in the All-Island competition in previous years and will this year be seeking to win the ‘Best County Award’.  Inis Oírr (2010), Clonfert/Meelick (2009) and Clonberne (2007) were named overall winners in their respective categories while four other Galway communities finished as runners up since 2003.
