What is RAPID?
RAPID (Revitalising Areas by Planning, Investment Programme) is a focused Government initiative to target the 51 most disadvantaged urban areas in the country. This aims to ensure that priority attention is given to tackle the spatial concentration of poverty and social exclusion within these areas, which in County Galway includes the towns of Ballinasloe and Tuam. The initiative also requires Government Departments and State Agencies to bring about better co-ordination and closer integration in the delivery of their services. The towns of Ballinasloe and Tuam were designated as priority areas for the investment of Government resources in 2001 and an action plan for the development of new initiatives, investment and improved co-ordination between national and local agencies and communities was prepared and implemented under the direction of local Area Implementation Teams (AITs).
A new phase of the RAPID programme was agreed in 2007 focusing on seven thematic areas. These thematic areas focus on community safety & anti social behaviour, health, family support, physical environment, education, youth support and employment & training.
