Glenamaddy Community Development Company in partnership with Galway County Council and Galway Rural Development have embarked on a very ambitious and innovative project to digitally map, transcribe and photograph the memorials in 15 graveyards in Glenamaddy, Williamstown, Glinsk, Dunmore, Ballygar, Newbridge and Moylough.
Paddy Geraghty and Noreen Cunningham participants on the local Rural Social Scheme have been painstakingly transcribing information from memorials in Boyounagh. They are currently transcribing the memorials in Ballinakill Graveyard in Glinsk and will be working on the transcription of the memorials of the other graveyards in the coming months. This work is a labour of love as many of the memorials are difficult to read and decipher. Members of the local community in each of the parishes also provide vital information and assistance to Paddy and Noreen to assist them in their work.
Each memorial is photographed by Glenamaddy Community Development Company and the memorial inscriptions are put onto a database. Cartographer Padraig Higgins produces a very detailed map of each graveyard. A map board is placed at the entrance to each graveyard to assist people visiting find their family plot.
Cllr. Tom McHugh, Mayor of the County of Galway said ‘This is the first time that this work has been carried out to date, and it should prove to be of enormous value to anyone now, and in future generations, who wish to locate their loved ones’ graves in North East Galway’.
