Library Plan
The following priorities for the Galway Library Service have been identified;
The priority is to develop in each of our libraries a quality book collection.
To weave reading into the very fabric of the culture, and make it a mainstay of community.
The priority is to make each of our Libraries a special place for children.
The moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the better. It's an enormous force for good.
The priority is to make the local library the cultural hub of each town and village.
Libraries are public spaces, places of leisure, education, information and welcome. Library users want community and they want that kind of community that expands their world, that enables them to have an intellectual and imaginative life, and helps them find their passion
To be a repository for all local history and local studies material relating to Galway City and County.
To provide appropriate staff training and bibliographic materials
To enable staff to be the community’s specialists in books and other informational materials
In print and through the Internet to provide reference and general information services and collections.
These resources are to directly reflect community needs
To promote cultural awareness through collections and programmes.
To satisfy the desire of our readers to understand and appreciate their own cultural heritage and that of other groups. Whenever possible the Library will promote awareness of other peoples and other cultures.
