Oxford Art Online   is the new gateway for online art information, and will be the home for forthcoming art reference products and subscriptions. Previously known as Grove Art Online which was first launched in 1998, this new release represents an exciting and long-anticipated upgrade in site functionality and graphic design. Through Oxford Art Online , you are now able to cross search and browse a suite of valuable art reference publications simultaneously with Grove Art Online : The Oxford Companion to Western Art , Encyclopedia of Aesthetics , and Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms . Oxford Art Online also enhances your capacity to search through a behind-the-scenes thesaurus, an improved advanced search, and a sophisticated fielded bibliography search.

Wilson's Biography Reference Bank combines the in-depth, original profiles of Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated, the thorough periodicals coverage of Biography Index, and full-text articles, page images, and abstracts from the complete range of Wilson databases, to bring you Wilson’s largest biography database yet, covering more than 470,000 people.

Wilson's Book Review Digest indexes and provides excerpts of reviews of current English-language fiction and non-fiction with entries drawn from thousands of periodicals covered by other WilsonWeb databases.

Wilson's OmniFile Full Text, Mega Edition dramatically expands your periodical resources with electronic access to full text articles, page images, article abstracts, and citations from thousands of sources. Literature

The  Literature Resource Center (InfoTrac) is the world's most current, comprehensive, and reliable online literature database. Uniquely relevant to today's curriculum, Literature Resource Center's rich critical, biographical and contextual materials support interdisciplinary approaches, information literacy, and the development of critical thinking skills. Researchers at all levels will find the information they need on authors and their works in all genres and disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world.

Music

Oxford Music Online is a new gateway for online music resources and incorporates Grove Music Online. All articles are now grouped together, under one search result.The first article linked to by a search result is now the ‘primary’ Grove Music Online article on the subject, and it is subject to a regular updating and revision programme. Other articles, from specialist dictionaries such as The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition, are now available via a link from this primary article.

Newspapers
Newsbank allows you to search back issues of one or more newspapers using an easy to use but powerful interface. The newspapers available in our collection are:

One or more of these newspapers may be searched simultaneously.

Free Resources

Dictionaries and Theasuri

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and Online Thesaurus is a modern up to date dictionary. It pronounces words (a sound recording of the word is played in your browser). In addition it has a word of the day feature and it provides word games.

Education

ERIC - The Education Resources Information Center sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, produces the world's premier database of journal and non-journal education literature. ERIC provides a public Web site for searching nearly 1.2 million citations going back to 1966 and, with contributor permission, accessing more than 110,000 full-text materials at no charge. ERIC is moving forward with its modernization program, incorporating new technologies to facilitate the addition of materials and help users identify, evaluate, and obtain education-related research and other materials.

Encyclopedias

Encarta  contains more than 4,500 articles on the world of knowledge--from aardvark to Zambia . It includes a dictionary and an atlas.

Wikipedia  is a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It contains millions of articles in most subject areas.

Film

The Internet Movie Database  is a searchable database of actors and films.

Rotten Tomatoes is a searchable database of films. It provides reviews and it scores films based on the reviews that that film has received. This site gives you an idea whether or not it is worth taking the trouble to see a particular movie.

History of Galway

Books on Galway's History

A number of books on Galway's history are available online . These books include:

The Lawrence Family Album , an important archive, is a wonderful history, pictorial and textual, of the family and the district of Lawrencetown. It is a treasure trove in terms of its value to local history containing so much rich detail on the family, together with late nineteenth century photographs of the village of Lawrencetown , family portraits and interior views of the house. The Album reveals so much about an era and a family which have long since disappeared but which played an important part in the development of the local landscape.

Galway Reader is a web site consisting of articles on Galway's history. It was edited by Samuel J. Maguire and was compiled in the 1950's. It is now available online.

In 1838, John O'Donovan was commissioned to list the place names of Ireland . For each place name, he listed variations of its name, its irish form, its translation, its situation, and a brief description. At present, we are putting the O'Donovan Place Names of Galway on the web.

Local History Websites

Local History Websites is a web page that briefly outlines other resources on Galway's history and on genealogy.

Literature

Bartleby is an excellent website. It allows you to search a great many reference works. For example, if you are trying to find a quote from one of Shakespeare's plays and know only some of the words contained in the quote, this site will enable you to retrieve the line from the play. Search options provided are listed hereunder.

All Reference

The Database of Award Winning Children's Literature creates a tailored reading list of quality children's literature by identifying books that have won one of the indexed awards.

The Great Web Sites for Kids is a database of web sites selected and recommended by librarians in the US . It is possible to search by age of intended audience, keywords, or web address

Medical

The British Medical Journal site contains the current issue and past issues of this journal. These are searchable. Full text articles are available.

Free Medical Journals site is dedicated to the promotion of free access to medical journals over the Internet.

PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

Science

The Directory of Open Access Journals covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. It aims to cover all subjects and languages. There are now 2293 journals in the directory. Currently 653 journals are searchable at article level.
