FREE IN LIEU LICENCE
While you are required to carry your driving licence with you at all times when driving, you are not required by law to change your Permit or Licence if you change your name or address. However, it is advisable as you are required to show evidence of your licence if requested by An Garda Siochana, therefore, your licence should contain up-to-date information.
Free-in-lieu licences are issued in the following cases:
- Extra category added
- Change of name/address
- Removal of endorsement
- If an error has been made in the issue of licence (e.g. incorrect date of birth)
In the case of 1, 2, and 3 above, please note that you will need to submit all documentation (except the fee) required for your licence type – please refer to the Sections on Learner Permit & Full Licence for a full listing of the documentation.
