HOW TO PAY YOUR MOTOR TAX
It is a legal requirement in Ireland to have motor tax in order to drive your vehicle in a public place, and you must display the current tax disc on the windscreen of your vehicle. Motor Tax discs are issued for periods of 3, 6 or 12 whole calendar months.
There are 3 forms with which you can apply for motor tax:
- RF100 – this is the form you get from your motor dealer or the NCT Centre when you purchase a new vehicle or import a vehicle. It is used for first-time taxing only and not for renewal of motor tax.
- RF100A – this is a blank renewal form which is available from Motor Tax Offices, Public Libraries and Garda Stations.
- RF100B – this is a computer-generated renewal form issued by the Department of Transport which is posted to you about a month before your tax is due to expire and includes a PIN to allow you tax online.
There are a number of payment options open to customers depending on which Reminder Form you have, and the circumstances of your renewal:

The online motor tax service enables vehicle owners to pay their motor tax by secure link over the internet. The reminder Form RF100B issued by the Department of Transport has a PIN number printed on the right hand side. By entering the Vehicle Registration Number and PIN, you can access the motor tax on-line service where vehicle insurance details and details of your credit / laser card will also be required to renew your motor tax. You can pay up to 3 months arrears online provided you are also taxing the vehicle at the same time. If you lose your PIN or have other queries, you can contact the Department of Transport.
If you don’t have a home computer, you can still renew your motor tax on-line by using the computer terminals provided by the Council for this purpose at our offices in Tuam, Loughrea, and Galway Headquarters, where you will also be able to print off a receipt of your transaction. Internet access is also available at your local library.
Use Form RF100B to renew your motor tax by post – you can use your preferred method of payment whether that is bank draft, cheque, Postal or Money Order, or by completing the Credit Card details section on the form. Please do not send cash via the postal system.
If you need to pay arrears, or have an ‘off the road’ period witnessed by An Garda Síochána, you must use Form RF100A and complete these parts of the form. You can then send the completed form by post with your preferred method of payment.
Galway Motor Tax Offices issue 95% of all postal applications within 3 days. Cheques should be made payable to 'Galway Motor Tax Office'.
You can renew your motor tax anytime from when you receive Form RF100B a number of weeks prior to your renewal date, and this will also help you avoid queues which arise closer to the renewal date. Please note that you must use Form RF100A if you need to pay arrears or have an ‘off the road’ period witnessed by An Garda Síochána, and can then pay by cash, credit card, cheque or Postal / Money Order at your local Motor Tax Office.
