Driving Licences

Full | 1st Provisional | 2nd Provisional | 3rd Provisional | International Licences | Exchange of Driving Licence | Duplicate Licence

To apply for a Full Licence you will need:

To apply for a 1st Provisional Licence you will need:

  1. Evidence of having passed the Theory Test
  2. Completed Application Form
  3. A Birth Certificate
  4. Marriage Certificate (if appropriate)
  5. A medical report for classes C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED and ED1
  6. An eyesight report for classes A, A1, B, EB and W - eyesight report valid for one month from issue
  7. Fee for 2 years - € 15
  8. Two photographs (signed on back)

To apply for a 2nd Provisional Licence you will need:

  1. Application Form
  2. 2 photos (signed on the back)
  3. Old Licence/Last Licence
  4. Fee of € 15

To apply for a 3rd Provisional Licence you will need:

  1. Two photos (signed on back)
  2. Failure Cert (valid for two years only)
  3. Old Licence
  4. Appropriate Fee

If you have not sat a test in the last two years you must submit:

Receipt from Driving Test Section Government Buildings, Ballina, Co. Mayo (096) 70677. In this case a 1 year licence will only be granted.

International Licences:

Apply to Automobile Association, Dublin Phone : (01) 2833555

Exchange of Driving Licences:

  1. Full licence from other country (see list of exchange countries).
  2. Full licence application form.
  3. Exchange of Drivers Licence form.
  4. 2 photos (signed on back)
  5. Appropriate fee

Duplicate Licences:

  1. Application Form
  2. 2 photos (signed on back)
  3. €10 Fee

Free-in-lieu licences are issued in the following cases:
  1. Extra category added
  2. Change of name/address
  3. Removal of endorsement
  4. If an error has been made in the issue of licence (e.g. incorrect date of birth)
