Marine Section

The Marine Section comes under the remit of the Roads and Transportation Directorate.
There are 244 Piers, Harbours and Landing Places in Galway, 88 of which are in the charge of Galway County Council.
There are 689km of coastline in County Galway.The Main functions of Marine section are as follows:

Major Pier and Harbour Developments – Strategic Piers

These can involve any of the following
-          construction of new piers
-          pier extensions
-          construction of slipways 
-          provision of turning bays
-          construction of breakwaters/sheltered harbours
-          dredging
-          other pier improvements

Small Piers - Developments and Improvements

Preparation of a five year programme for the development and improvement of small piersCarrying out annual programme of works in accordance with this five year programme

Carrying out of Annual Maintenance programme for Piers and Harbours and Yacht Moorings.

Coastal Protection
Carrying out of  measures to combat and prevent coastal erosion.

Adoption of Bye-laws to:
Regulate and control traffic in Harbours
Explosive Bye-laws
