IN TOWN WITHOUT MY CAR

22nd SEPTEMBER

More than Just a Day !

‘In Town Without My Car’ / Car Free Day

‘In Town Without My Car’ and the date of the 22nd September are firmly established as an opportunity to pause and consider what our town centres could be like with less motor traffic.  It challenges people to question what our streets are really for, and whether the appropriate balance has been achieved.

Galway County Council recognises ‘In Town Without My Car’ / Car Free Day not as just a one day event but as a unique opportunity to demonstrate the potential of using streets as social spaces and to facilitate public transport, walking and cycling.

An opinion poll undertaken by the Council during European Mobility Week 2008 confirmed significant support for ‘In Town Without My Car’ (Car Free Day) with 50% wanting the initiative to be repeated at least once a month or more frequently, 15.7% opting for once every 3 months, 15.2% twice a year, 16.5% once a year with only 1.7% indicating that they did not want the initiative to be repeated.

The main advantages associated with ‘In Town Without My Car’ (Car Free Day) by the public included:   18.2% raising awareness of transport problems, 16.7% easier to walk and cycle around while 26.4% felt the street is a friendlier place and felt safer.
