Road Traffic Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws
Before new speed limits are introduced the following procedure, which is set out in the Road Traffic Act 2004, is followed:
- Notice given to all Town Councils within the County which will be affected by the proposals
- Notice given to the Garda Commissioner.
- Representations received from either of the above within one month to be considered.
- Consent of the National Roads Authority to be obtained for all proposals which affect National Routes.
- Draft Bye-Laws are put on public display for 30 days.
- The draft bye-laws together with written submissions received within the 30 day period, are placed before the members of the Council for adoption.
- If adopted, a notice is placed in a local newspaper advising the public of the adoption of the new the bye-laws.
- The Special Speed Limits that may be specified in bye-laws are for:
30km/hr. 50km/hr 60km/hr
80km/hr 100km/hr 120km/hr
The current Bye-Laws in force in County Galway are the:
Road Traffic (Speed Limits) County Galway Bye-Laws 2004
Special speed limits may also be introduced in particular circumstances for:
- Specified periods during the day
- Specified days
- Specified part/lane of a motorway
Road Works Speed Limits may be introduced at locations during a period that Road Works are in progress, in the interests of road safety.
