VETERINARY SERVICES
The Veterinary Department carries out duties in a number of different areas including:
- Veterinary Public Health
- Disease Control
- Dog Control
- Animal Welfare
The majority of the work of Galway County Council Veterinary Department is in the area of veterinary public health & food safety. Galway County Council has a service contract with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. This contract provides for, among other things, the regulation of certain food premises in County Galway. These food premises include small local abattoirs and meat processing plants.
It also works in conjunction with various departments and sections within Galway County Council.
Galway County Council Veterinary Service liaises on a regular basis with other agencies especially the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Department of Agriculture & Food, Health Service Executive.
Structure
The veterinary department consists of 2 full time veterinary officers with administrative support. Five private Veterinary Surgeons are employed as Temporary Veterinary Inspectors.
