Sheep Scab
Sheep Scab is a serious contagious skin disease caused by sheep mite, Psoroptes Ovis. This has led to it being categorised as a notifable disease under Diseases of Animals Legislation. This means that any suspected case of sheep scab should be reported to Galway County Council Veterinary Department. Galway County Council Veterinary Department examines all such cases and determines the presence of scab by means of clinical examination of the flock or laboratory examination of wool samples. Affected flocks will have movement restrictions placed on them until the disease has been successfully treated.
Sheep Scab, if left untreated leads to serious welfare problems in the flock.
