Slaughter of Animals
Abattoir workers who carry out the act of animal slaughter require a valid up to date slaughter licence. Galway County Council Veterinary Department issues licences to these slaughtermen on the basis of their fitness & competence. The welfare of the animals at the time of slaughter is fundamental to this as is the requirement for best hygiene practices. Slaughter licences are also required for personnel carrying out animal slaughter in the event of a class A disease outbreak, for example, Foot and Mouth disease.
