Background & Scope of Project
Tuam is a designated Hub Town under the National Spatial Strategy and is recognised as being rich in heritage and culture, with a strong community tradition. This project aims to improve the quality of life amongst its residents and attract further investment for future sustainable development, through the upgrading of essential core services.
This €28m value project will be one of the largest water infrastructural projects to be undertaken in Ireland in 2010. The works will consist of the construction of:
- 32 km of water main
- 9 km of surface water sewers
- 7 km of combined sewers
- Construction of 5,250 m3 capacity reservoir
- Construction of 1,200 m3 storm water holding tank
- Installation of Broadband (10 Km), Gas Mains (10 km), ESB (1 km) and Eircom (1 km).
The project will improve water capacity and security of the water supply through the replacement of the old watermain system and the installation of a new watermain network within the town. A new sewer system will also be constructed, which will reduce infiltration through the provision of separate foul and surface water sewers. The installation of core essential services such as broadband, gas, telecom and ESB will enhance the attractiveness of Tuam for future businesses.
