Statement by Galway County Council on the publication of the Technical Report on the Tuam Site & the Public Consultation Process on the Options & Appropriate Courses of Action.
Galway County Council will, at the request of the Department of Children & Youth Affairs and on behalf of the Inter-Departmental Group, commission an independent consultation process on the options and appropriate courses of actions available to Government at the site of the former Mother & Baby Home, Tuam, Co. Galway.
The consultation process, to operate independently of the Council, will avail of the Technical Report on the Tuam Site, delivered by the Expert Technical Group on the 30th September 2017, as the basis for the consultation process.
The Council is aware that there will be varying views on the options and the appropriate courses of action identified by the Expert Technical Group. The independent consultation process will afford all with a personal connection to the former Home, including former residents, family members and the local residents, and the wider public an important opportunity to express their views on this sensitive matter.
The Council is currently working to put the arrangements in place to facilitate the independent consultation process. It is intended to announce details of the process in early January 2018. It is proposed that the consultation process would conclude to allow for a report to be submitted to the Inter-Departmental Group by the second quarter of 2018.
