Local Agenda 21
Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Environment Partnership Fund is a small grant scheme offered by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government each year to suppport non-profit initiatives aiming to increase awareness of environmental issues at local level, which complement national environmental policies such as those on Waste, Biodiversity, Water Conservation and Climate Change.
The Department funding is matched on 50/50 basis with the Local Authority, and applicants can also seek funding from other sources.
The main focus of the project should be environmental awareness and education. Galway County Council has funded a wide variety of projects since this initiative began, such as community gardens and allotments, composting workshops, education drives, recycling initiatives, tree planting, outdoor classrooms, sensory gardens and many other types of locally focussed developments.
These projects encourage greater participation by communities in local decision making and help bring people together to build a more inclusive, more resilient society.
The Council's Environment Section continuously promote good environmental practices through the Local Agenda 21 initiative.
