Galway County Council delivers various environmental programmes to schools and all schools are invited to participate. The Environmental Awareness Officers are available to visit primary and secondary schools to offer advice on environment issues such as litter control, waste management, waste prevention, water conservation and protection, and energy. Presentations can be arranged for whole school or classes, Transition Years, CSPE, LCVP, Leaving Certificate Applied, or as part of Geography week, Science week or at any time during the year.
The Environment Awareness Officers are also available to give information and advice to pre-schools and those operating childcare facilities.
GREEN SCHOOLS
All schools in Co. Galway are invited to register for the Green Schools Programme. The Green Schools Programme is managed by An Taisce in co-operation with Galway County Council in the Galway County Council functional area.
Green Schools is an international project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole school action for the environment. This process will help pupils recognise the importance of environmental issues and integrate them into their school and home lives. Green Schools is both a programme and an award scheme. The programme can be adopted by any school using certain guidelines. The award will be given to schools that complete the seven steps of the programme.
The first stage of the programme is to reduce the amount of litter and waste generated in the school. This can be done through simple steps such as litter control, waste prevention, composting and recycling. Once a school achieves the seven steps of the programme and has reduced the amount of litter and waste generated they can apply for their Green Flag. Once a flag has been awarded the school moves onto the new theme of energy. The flag has to be renewed every two years and in each two year period a new environment theme is addressed.
