Conference - Clifden May 17th & 18th 2012
Over 100 delegates attended a 2 day International Conference on The ‘Living Landscape’ in Clifden, County Galway, on 17th & 18th May 2012, organised by Galway County Council. International and national speakers discussed the different ways we can use the outdoors to create jobs, improve our health, and sustain a quality of life for our ageing population.
Delegates were informed of the current initiatives that are taking place both in Ireland and abroad to create employment directly from outdoor recreation, (a rapidly growing sector of Tourism); how outdoor recreation activities can be used to improve people’s standard of health; and new technologies that are being developed to assist and enable people to tackle obesity through outdoor activity. The influence of activity in later years on our quality of life was a subject that was also discussed.
Entrepreneurs (Jim Kennedy Atlantic Sea Kayaking and Nathan Kingerlee Outdoors Ireland) who are managing successful businesses based on outdoor activities also gave presentations on how we can use these resources to generate returns and create employment.
Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was the guest speaker at the conference dinner and embodied the discussions of earlier in the day when he entertained the delegates with his after dinner speech on the history of Irish involvement in the Olympics.
The presentations will appear below as they are made available to us:
