Creative Ireland Programme 2017-2022
Creative Ireland is the Government’s Legacy Programme following on from the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. It is a five-year government led, culture-based initiative designed to promote individual, community and national wellbeing. The national Creative Ireland Programme acknowledges that Local Authorities are the primary instruments of community engagement and have significant capacity for local programme delivery. See www.creative.ireland.ie
To implement the national strategy at local level, Galway County Council has developed a Culture and Creativity Strategy 2018- 2022, it has been adopted by Council and identifies 8 key priority areas. This Creative Ireland Strategy will be supported and implemented by a collaborative, cross-departmental team which includes representatives from the following service areas: Libraries and Archives, Arts, Heritage, Irish Language, Conservation, Social Inclusion, Sports, Economic Development and Corporate Services.
In 2017, we launched our first Implementation Plan and featured several pilot programmes which linked in with national Creative Ireland priorities. Projects included Galway’s Great Read, Ballinasloe Strings Festival, Crinniú na Casca, Galway’s Gastronomy Heritage Project, Architecture at the Edge, Songs for our Children, Lego for Adults, ENtopia Gort, and the Silent Book Project, all of which were very well received and have a positive impact.
The Implementation Plan for 2022 will be led by the Culture Team through the delivery of projects which meet the strategic priorities of our Strategy. We will also be announcing a Creative Ireland Bursary Award Scheme 2022 for groups and individuals. The key objective of these bursaries will be to provide support to individuals and community groups towards activities and projects that will encourage creativity, collaboration and cultural participation in County Galway.
